I struggled to really like A Good Man, but in the end it was just so dark that I couldn’t.  It’s a quick read and I thought the writing was excellent.  I didn’t find it all to be the “slow, oppressive narrative” that at least one other reviewer describes; in fact, I moved through it very quickly.  But the story is just so dark and depressing that I couldn’t really love it.  There weren’t even any likeable characters in the book; they were all flawed and dysfunctional beyond any real hope for redemption.  Maybe the story just isn’t for me, but the 3 stars are for a well written book, I couldn’t rate the story itself that highly.

Ghost Hunting: True Stories of Unexplained Phenomena from The Atlantic Paranormal Society by   Jason Hawes , Grant Wilson , and Michael Jan Friedman 3 Stars I was always a fan of the Sci-Fi channel TV show Ghost Hunters, although I admit I’m quite a skeptic when it comes to the paranormal.  So when I found a copy of the TV stars’ book I’d forgotten that I owned I figured it was the perfect read for Halloween. Unfortunately, I was disappointed.   There were a couple of pretty wild stories that went beyond anything I remember from the TV show, but in general I learned more about the TV show than I did about ghosts and the descriptions of each experience were very, very brief.   I would have preferred a lot more detail.   I guess I’m still a skeptic.

The Wax Pack

  The Wax Pack: On the Open Road in Search of Baseball’s Afterlife by   Brad Balukjian   3 Stars   I was disappointed in The Wax Pack .  It wasn’t that the book was bad; it was enjoyable enough.  It’s just that I expected something very different, and something that I think would have been considerably more.  The concept grabbed me as soon as I saw the book for the first time:  open an old pack of baseball cards and then track down the players pictured to find out what their lives after baseball have been like.  Unfortunately, there was far too much of the author’s own story and far too little of the players’ stories for my taste.  There really wasn’t anything about Brad Balukjian that I was particularly interested in, but I really wanted to know a lot more about the players he managed to meet. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/51312349-the-wax-pack
